Why bears near Squamish rivers are easier to surprise right now

Bears getting ready to hibernate are busy eating and pay less attention to what is around them. The District of Squamish says they are often near berry bushes and along waterways feeding on spawning salmon. Trail users can easily spook them in a surprise encounter.

What is happening

Bears in the Squamish area are getting ready for winter hibernation. The District of Squamish shared this in its Wildlife Wednesday post on November 6, 2026.

At this time of year, bears spend much of their time eating. The District says they are often found:

Why it matters on the trails

When bears are focused on eating, they are less aware of what is going on around them. That means they may not notice a person coming until the last moment.

The District says bears in this state can be easily spooked by trail users in surprise encounters. A surprise meeting is what can lead to a conflict between people and wildlife.

Who it affects

This matters most for anyone using trails near berry patches, creeks and rivers where salmon are spawning. That includes people walking, running, biking or walking dogs.
