About this guide

• We started from the District’s official list of declared candidates — all 18 people running for mayor and council.
• For each person we read their campaign website, local news coverage (mainly the Squamish Chief and the Squamish Reporter), letters and public statements. For current councillors we also used their 2022–2026 council voting record.
• Every position on this site links to its source. Look for the small [source] links.
• We never guess. If we could not find a public statement on an issue, we write “No public position found”. That is not a criticism of the candidate — many are still publishing their platforms.
• Candidates are always listed alphabetically by last name, the same as the ballot.

Each quiz statement is scored from “strongly disagree” (−2) to “strongly agree” (+2). We scored each candidate the same way, using only their public statements and votes. Your match with a candidate is how close your answers are to theirs, averaged over the questions where both of you have an answer. Identical answers score full marks, one step apart scores two thirds, two steps apart one third, and three or more steps apart nothing — so answering “mixed” does not count as agreeing with someone who strongly agrees. Questions you mark as important count double. Matches based on only a few questions are pulled slightly toward 50%, so a candidate with a thin public record cannot top your list by chance.

“No opinion — don’t count this one” leaves a question out of your score entirely; “Mixed — I’m in the middle” is a real answer and is scored. If a candidate has a public position on fewer than 4 of the questions you answered, we do not give them a percentage at all, and list them separately. A high match on few questions is weaker than a high match on many — the results always show how many questions each match is based on.

Your answers stay in your own browser. We do not collect, store or see them.

We do not use “left/right” or “authoritarian/libertarian” labels. Those come from national politics and would be guesswork for a town council race. Instead the compass has three lines — money, growth, and Woodfibre LNG & climate — and each candidate’s position on a line is simply the average of their sourced scores on the quiz statements about that topic. The compass page lists exactly which statements feed each line.

If a candidate has no public record on a topic, they are left off that line rather than placed in the middle. A dashed or hollow marker means the placement rests on very little evidence.

We want this to be accurate and fair to every candidate. If you are a candidate and want to update your profile, add your positions on any issue, answer the 12 quiz statements or send a photo, email us — we will add it. If you are anyone else and something here is wrong, out of date or missing, please tell us and include a link to a public source. We will fix confirmed errors quickly and note the date of the last update at the bottom of every page.
