Heavy rain is on the way, and Environment Canada says it is the first storm in a series of wet and windy weather. A rainfall warning covers Howe Sound and parts of Metro Vancouver. Rain starts after midnight tonight and lasts through Friday, with up to 80 mm possible in some areas.

What is coming

Environment Canada has issued a rainfall warning for Howe Sound. A strong low pressure system will bring heavy rain starting after midnight tonight. The rain is expected to continue through the day on Friday and taper off Friday evening.

Environment Canada says this is the first storm in a series of wet and windy weather ahead.

How much rain

  • Up to 80 mm for communities at higher elevations on the North Shore and communities near southern Howe Sound
  • Closer to 50 mm for lower elevations and communities in northeast Metro Vancouver, including Coquitlam

The warning covers the North Shore (including West Vancouver and North Vancouver), northeast Metro Vancouver (including Coquitlam) and Howe Sound.

What to watch for

  • Water will likely pool on roads and in low lying areas
  • Visibility may suddenly drop at times
  • Some property damage is possible
  • Watch for washouts near rivers, creeks and culverts

Environment Canada asks people to clear fallen leaves from storm drains in their neighbourhood to help reduce damage to property.
